my chosen brief project

School of Art and Design 2009/10: Module GDES30055/57

project Title: The Frequent Flyer

Project Tutors: To be confirmed.

Project duration: Five Weeks (16 Oct – 17 Nov)

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a personal intellectual engagement with the subject and show the ability to evaluate and synthesise secondary and primary sources.

• Align Personal working processes with current professional thought and practice

• Use appropriate visual language and media for specific design activities

• Apply a professional attitude to independent learning, project management, and make effective visual and verbal presentations.

Aims of the project

To give you the opportunity to develop your image making skills.

To enable you to consider type and image together.

To give you the opportunity to develop your research skills.

To enhance your appreciation of paper stock and print techniques.

Background

With the increase in commerce, wealth and opportunity during the last decade the demand for air travel is unprecedented. A large number of airlines have sprung up and established names have scrambled to add new and often very lucrative routes to their schedules. Europeans are now seeing their continent in the same way Americans have theirs for years – the flight becoming as common as a bus trip or journey by train.

At the same time our ability to record our journeys has never been easier or more exciting. Mobile phones are digital cameras, digital cameras are small enough to fit in the palm of a hand and video cameras are high-resolution tools, able to shoot movie quality footage. The resulting collision of cheap air travel, increased destinations and modern technology has seen the rise of the phenomenon known as the ‘camera phone reporter’

The Brief

Taking the nature of modern day air travel as a starting point create a promotional calendar for distribution to an audience of your choice. You could simply choose to select a number of destinations a particular airline travels to and depict the cities illustratively, or concentrate on a social, ethical or human aspect associated with air travel and create imagery to reflect your position. Social commentary or commercial promotion – the choice is up to you. The twelve most opulent cities British Airways services or the twelve most dangerous? The twelve most unusual destinations or the twelve that are, in actual fact, furthest from the actual city they are named after? When landing at Barcelona Girona airport do you really expect an 80km drive south to your destination city?

Submission Requirements

You must produce a calendar of at least six images. The size and dimensions are up to you. The images can be illustrated however you like, drawn, photographed, printed, collaged, digitally manipulated; it is entirely up to you. The calendar must function, ie include days and months and be identifiable as a promotional item for the audience you have chosen.

A range of sketchbooks and research material.

Additional Information

Obviously we are not expecting you to criss-cross the globe in search of imagery so you will need to be creative in how you research, source and make your images. Pay attention to type – how does it integrate with your imagery. Does it make a sympathetic partner or is it meant to clash? What about paper stock – high gloss, matte, recyclable or ultra-expensive, planet draining mega-paper!? Be clear with your reasoning and adventurous and innovative with your image-making.

man status

been not getting enough sleep, but now i enjoyed doing my project because of the reason of just going out to see things. : )

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

stomach began to grumble and the people in the hall heard me.
blame it on my chair being squeaky.

bought our scanner and printer
at a very happy rate

ate dinner with rachel.
ryan went football.

hot home cooked meal

the weather is cold, the food turned cold, and it leaves me with a cold appetite.

after today's event of trying out the arena and to the fresher's fair,

I'm exhausted of going out again to find food.

Rachel and i decided to stay at our own flat and cook some HOT food. thank you ryan for the ingredients ^^

rachel did the vegetable cubes, ham and the dishes ^^ while me on the other hand cooks

i really miss cooking at home, all the ingredient is in the fridge where i don't have to worry to get groceries or whether the food's getting expired.

if its still in the fridge, its safe to eat ( checked by mum)

rachel washing the pots and pans.

rachel's bowl

my bowl

our meal ^^,

just by eating only full of vegetables and a small amount of crabsticks and ham it fills our stomachs better than the sandwiches.

eeeeeeee

Recently i have been waking up earlier from bed in Uk compared to in Malaysia.

MESSAGE TO DUCKY
..........................................................................
thank you for your alarm clock! i brought it
with me and placed it beside me, and it works!

in the evening time, we ( Rachel, me , and Ryan) were going for a walk after our meal and happen to stop by in front of a cafe store to check out the menu prices.

then came along a man who is not so presentable looking and reeked of alcohol or smoke?
i can't smell properly even if the food smells good. According to Rachel, who's been my eyes to see and nose to smell, the smell stinged and the cold breeze kept blowing which made the smell more circulated into the air.

the man stood by us and said
' that unhealthy food.'

we just looked at him. he came closer and he started showing his developed photos to us. most of the photos are asian girls O_O

he told us that he took a picture of a asian girl living nearby the store we stood and he said that girl never contacted him.

O_O he is not
'the taste',

ladies and gentleman.

he handed a photo of a guy acting as robin hood to Rachel and me a picture of a swan, but he didn't give to Ryan. He is coming closer towards me and rachel, that every step he come we back out. Ryan told the guy we are heading some place and we are late, the guy ignored and just continue to talk and show pictures.

finally he wrote his details behind the picture.

he asked for my name,

i don't like unknown people to know me well so i gave part of it.

i said, 'man'

he 'man'??

i ' yea, man'

he ' surname/ family name'?

i told him no family.

then we quickly depart from there. next, we saw him entered into a chinese store, targeting asian girls.

careful people.

free pizza and shirts? im there.

these pictures are self timer pictures. unfortunately the unintended shots seemed more clearer than the set up.

event of free pizza and shirts now happening at the student union located at the byron house.

took free shirts : )

it is rare to see Asian people there, we are outnumbered O_O

didnt eat much of the food here, not a bread lover, low on meat too.

i enjoyed seeing ryan and rachel eat, it is like a passion for eating!

goose fair

we went too early for the goose fair event

hamster ball flung in the air.

rides that reached the sky! all these rides looked fun but it is costly, 2- 3 pound per ride and a long queue?
balloon man, they are many of them at every corner and they all looked the same.
the night is freezing cold till our fingers became numb.

i've ate dinner from home.

may i present

'the subway king and queen!'

for lunch or dinner, may they always reign!

accommodation
internet
food
supplies
.
.
.

we head off to the market to make dinner for last night.
bought 1 chicken drumstick
asked the butcher to cut into 3 pieces
the butcher looked at all 3 of us and asked if this is for a party

(smirk)

bought 2 salmon

and vegetables.

pictures will be uploaded soon. waiting for the photographer's photos.

yuck!

in our accomodation contract, on the day of the inspection of our living rooms and personal rooms are not clean, they will hire some cleaners to do it.
with a fee of 10-20 pound per hour. O_O

not only the price scares me, but the things laying around.
im allergic to dust and i can't eat much meat now due to my skin condition.

the living room which we seldom use, are filled with trash and stains,
trash in plastic bags are not thrown out.

rachel and i cleaned every spot so it looks presentable for us to go in and to get our supplies.

the toaster, we shaked the whole toaster over the trash bin to get rid of the little burnt crumbs stuck in the toaster.

the trash that has not been taken out. we do not know this trash belongs to.

scrub the stains off the stove. ( this is the after result.)

london lights at night

traffic light lits at a descending mode. red and yellow lits at the same time before it turns green,
like race car feel.
colour blind..
cacing

london dinner turkish atmosphere

using stones or broken rocks/tiles to make a mosiac picture.

tile designs
my eating partner, rachel. they ordered a dish for us to share. lucky for us we manage to finish it.

since too hungry forgotten to take picture of the food. here's a big oven where they make their turkish pizza.

recommendation: try humous, tasty *kacang putih * spread.
