Aims of the project
To give you the opportunity to develop your image making skills.
To enable you to consider type and image together.
To give you the opportunity to develop your research skills.
To enhance your appreciation of paper stock and print techniques.
Background
With the increase in commerce, wealth and opportunity during the last decade the demand for air travel is unprecedented. A large number of airlines have sprung up and established names have scrambled to add new and often very lucrative routes to their schedules. Europeans are now seeing their continent in the same way Americans have theirs for years – the flight becoming as common as a bus trip or journey by train.
At the same time our ability to record our journeys has never been easier or more exciting. Mobile phones are digital cameras, digital cameras are small enough to fit in the palm of a hand and video cameras are high-resolution tools, able to shoot movie quality footage. The resulting collision of cheap air travel, increased destinations and modern technology has seen the rise of the phenomenon known as the ‘camera phone reporter’
The Brief
Taking the nature of modern day air travel as a starting point create a promotional calendar for distribution to an audience of your choice. You could simply choose to select a number of destinations a particular airline travels to and depict the cities illustratively, or concentrate on a social, ethical or human aspect associated with air travel and create imagery to reflect your position. Social commentary or commercial promotion – the choice is up to you. The twelve most opulent cities British Airways services or the twelve most dangerous? The twelve most unusual destinations or the twelve that are, in actual fact, furthest from the actual city they are named after? When landing at Barcelona Girona airport do you really expect an 80km drive south to your destination city?
Submission Requirements
You must produce a calendar of at least six images. The size and dimensions are up to you. The images can be illustrated however you like, drawn, photographed, printed, collaged, digitally manipulated; it is entirely up to you. The calendar must function, ie include days and months and be identifiable as a promotional item for the audience you have chosen.
A range of sketchbooks and research material.
Additional Information
Obviously we are not expecting you to criss-cross the globe in search of imagery so you will need to be creative in how you research, source and make your images. Pay attention to type – how does it integrate with your imagery. Does it make a sympathetic partner or is it meant to clash? What about paper stock – high gloss, matte, recyclable or ultra-expensive, planet draining mega-paper!? Be clear with your reasoning and adventurous and innovative with your image-making.
